Educational Courses

 Date : 1 April, 2010

Teaching of physicians and nurses trainees in a manner that minimizes medical errors and ensures competency is a priority.

To improve performance and reduce errors in patient care, medical simulation programs have been used in several centers for:

Re-creating clinical environments and improving skills.

Assessing interpersonal interactions with other clinical staff.

Evaluating teamwork, leadership, and communication skills.

Integrating knowledge, skills and decision making.

This course addresses areas of simulation education relevant to training in the Pediatric Intensive Care Environment.

The course content has been designed by and taught by the Medical and Surgical Directors of the Center for Simulation, Advanced Education and Innovation at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, USA

  Featured Guest Faculty

Vinay Nadkarni, MD
Medical Director, Center for Simulation, Advanced Education and Innovation.
University of Pennsylvania
School of Medicine, USA
Ellen Deutsch, MD, FACS

Topics

Just-in-Time and Just-in-Place Simulation to Improve Tracheal Intubation

Procedural Performance in the CHOP PICU.....What can we learn from this?

     (Vinay Nadkarni, MD)

Lecture/discussion of a randomized controlled, factorial design study of just-in-time simulation training to improve the quality and safety of tracheal intubation in the PICU)

The Sounds of Stridor in Children  (Ellen Deutsch, MD)

Based on a collection of videotapes of children with stridor, including how they sound and what they look like on the outside, and what they look like on the inside during endoscopy.  The presentation demonstrates a variety of causes of stridor in children that correlates the external findings, radiographs, and the internal findings, for conditions such as laryngomalacia, double aortic arch, papilloma, subglottic
stenosis, subglottic hemangioma, etc., including describing which conditions
require urgent management, etc.

Q-CPR: A demonstration of real-time feedback and RAPID debriefing to
improve quality of CPR (Vinay Nadkarni, MD)

A hands-on demonstration of real-time feedback, followed by a rapid team debriefing using display of accelerometer/force transducer captured data during a mock resuscitation to discuss key features of high quality CPR and resuscitation team function)

Interesting Presentations of Airway Foreign Bodies (Ellen Deutsch, MD)

A visual tour of the Airway" is a presentation of a series of cases of foreign body aspiration, and some *red herrings;* including XRay findings and the various endoscopic findings

PICU training and procedural certification of the future: what is in the
crystal ball?  (Vinay Nadkarni, MD)

A futuristic vision of what education, certification and re-certification for PALS, ACLS, ATLS in the future will bring, including elements of telemedicine, remote credentialing, just-in-time competency demonstrations, and innovative guidance/feedback tools)

How Smart People can use Simulation to learn from A Dummy’s Airway

(Elen Deutsch, MD)

Presents a sampling of uses of simulation to practice airway management skills,
including examples of skills training and research applications.
